A man has died and three others injured following a dynamite explosion while fishing near Tatana Village, just outside of Port Moresby on Wednesday afternoon.
Tatana Village has a total population of 3,500 people, with 20 per cent of the population relying heavily on the fishing industry in order to earn an income.
Dynamite fishing is common in Tatana, even though it is highly illegal and obviously, incredibly dangerous.
It is understood that the fisherman was checking if the dynamite was lit properly before throwing it out to sea, when it then exploded in the man’s hand.
Two of those seriously injured were admitted to Port Moresby General Hospital, and it is understood from an eye witness report that one of the survivors had body parts that may have been severed.
Police arrived at the scene to collect the remains of the deceased fishermen yesterday afternoon, but have yet to release official details on the incident as yet.
A source has informed EMTV that dynamites are usually homemade and the fuses to ignite the dynamite are bought from construction companies for as little as K50.
