A police vehicle was stoned this morning as clashes between groups of settlers escalated overnight in Madang, Papua New Guinea.
Provincial Police Commander, Jacob Singura, confirmed this morning that the vehicle belonging to a special operations unit was stoned by settlers from Wagol and the Billiau Maus Rot.
Tensions rose last night following the killing of a man and a woman, whose bodies were found on Saturday.
More than seven houses were burned and several people injured. Police have not yet confirmed the number of houses that have been destroyed in the fighting.
Public transport has been affected with parents withdrawing their children from school.
This latest clash comes weeks after another major clash between Sepik and Highlands settlers in Nagada outside of Madang Town.
Singura is now calling on parties involved to refrain from fighting and handover the suspects.
