Department of Works Reveals Plans for 2015

The business of variations in roads and bridges works and unnecessary landowner compensations will no longer be entertained by the government.

Works Minister, Francis Awesa said contract variations and landowner compensations have become industries of their own which stop.

These announcements were made today at the launching of the Department of Works 2015 work plan.

The launching of the workplan came at the end of the 3 day budget session that included works officers from around the country.

The department has seen a substantial increase in their budget over the last 3 years. This year the department will be working with a budget of 1.5 billion kina.

The department has ambitious plans to ensure 75% of all roads and bridges are in working condition by 2017.
Minister awesa said in order to achieve those plans; there will be no room for variations and compensations.

Among the top priorities for this year is the Highlands Highway.

Apart from the Government of PNG, the Asian Development Bank will also continue its assistance in keeping this economic lifeline open.

Roads and infrastructure will remain a top priority of the O’Neill government. The Prime Minister committed to ensure and procurement process are done in a timely manner and challenged contractors and engineers to deliver quality work.
