Chief Justice, Sir Salamo Injia says the courts have their own programs to address cases of violence, according to legislations.
Sir Salamo said reports of wife bashing, gender discrimination, sexual assault and child abuse, are given serious consideration by the courts, but fairly based on legislations.
He said “when these matters do end up in courts we address them seriously.”
These abuses are among those highlighted in the Human Rights Watch world report 2015 that described PNG as one of the most dangerous places in the world for woman to live in.
In 2014, cases of wife bashing, gender discrimination, sorcery deaths and related assaults, and excessive use of force by police are among human rights issues that continue to paint a bad image of PNG internationally, according to the Human rights report 2015.
But the Chief Justice says the courts in PNG are continuously facing challenges.
The challenges are not limited to administrative, but in all range of issues and legislation that they have to consider in addressing cases.
Sir Salamo says the judiciary has been expanding its services to the provinces since 2008 aimed at making judicial services accessible to people at the provincial level.
