Chief Secretary makes public call for gun surrender

Chief Secretary to Government,  Isaac Lupari is appealing to the public to surrender any unlicensed firearm that is in their possession.

Mr. Lupari said the Gun Moratorium is an effort to curb the widespread use of firearms in the country. Lupari said police have been given clear directions to conduct awareness in communities.

The Gun Moratorium was announced late last year and will end in March 2017. Between this time frame, the public is encouraged to surrender unlicensed firearms to police or authorities.  Lupari says all guns surrendered will be destroyed in public.

Lupari said guns will be burnt infront of police stations.

“Police will make sure all these unlicensed firearms will be burnt to ashes”, said Lupari.

Secretary Lupari made these statements following the deployment of troops to Hela for the Call Out Operation.  He also called on ring leaders in Hela to be responsible and handover guns used by civilians.

Lupari said both political and community leaders know where most high-powered rifles are located, and must help the Government arrest those responsible.
