Central Province Flooding : Nine confirmed dead & one reported missing

Nine people have been confirmed dead, and one is reported missing, following the heavy floods in Central Province.

From the nine confirmed deaths, six cases are from the Goilala District, two from Rigo and one from Vanapa in the Kairuku Hiri District. One person also from Vanapa is still missing.

Acting Provincial Administrator told EMTV News that this was the first time they have receive reports of people being killed. Eight of which were disaster related.

Mr Simbakua added that numerous attempts to reach Goilala district were unsuccessful due to bad weather conditions.

The unexpected high level of rainfall and strong winds in the Central Province has caught people by surprise.

Many were left homeless, food gardens were destroyed, no clean drinking water available and many were left nothing.

Kepa Nau an Agevairu local told EMTV News that the flood has left them without any garden food, they are now eating store goods.

According to Acting PA Simbakua, teams have been sent to affected areas to assess the situation.

The Central government is now focused in assisting the affected communities with food and drinking water.
