The national government is focusing financially on the completion of Pacific Games facilities before the games begin in July.

The pace of construction and rehabilitation of Pacific Games sporting facilities appears far from near-completion. The newly constructed Caritas Gymnasium in the nation’s capital provides an alternate venue to cater for in-house sporting codes.

Caritas Secondary School’s Deputy Principal Academic, Wilma Patenge said the multi sports complex is expected to be completed before the Pacific Games begins.

“While sporting facilities in the country are undergoing an overhaul in its infrastructure development, the phase appears to be at a snail’s pace.”

She added that the million kina facility could be a main venue for hire if the government sporting facilities are not ready on time.

“It can be used to host in-house sporting codes like table tennis, weightlifting, darts, bowling and snooker.”

As the facility nears completion, Caritas Secondary School’s administration has more plans for other infrastructure development.

The Korean government’s funding of over K4 million saw the construction of the sporting facility.

“This gymnasium will cater for up to 1,000 athletes engaged in different sporting codes,” Patenge said.
