Blood Shortage in Mt.Hagen Due to Election Incidents

The Western Highlands Provincial Health Authority is appealing to the Province and neighboring Provinces to donate blood.

Chief Executive Officer, Dr Paulus Ripa, says the hospital is running out of blood due to consistent treatment of casualties from election related incidents.

The Mt Hagen General Hospital has recently treated two major election-related incidents and is in urgent need of blood.

The Accident and Emergency Unit at Mt Hagen General Hospital has no blood bags, and casualties are still coming.

CEO Dr Paulus Ripa said within two weeks, the hospital has treated over twenty casualties, some of whom with very serious injuries requiring blood transfusion.

All of the incidents that occurred over the past two weeks were election related, like hit and run accidents by overloading vehicles with supporters, or drink driving accidents.

Dr Ripa wrote a statement fearing the worst is yet to come from the polling and counting period. He urged the public to refrain from engaging in unnecessary election activities which may result in accidents and unwanted problems.

Dr Ripa also warned the public that there is currently no blood available, and asks that people take good care of themselves during the election period. He has appealed to the public, business houses and the neighbouring Highlands Provinces to come forward and donate blood to the hospital.
