The bi-annual PNG Games provides a solid foundation for athletes to launch their sporting careers – providing both an avenue for exposure and development.
A classic example of someone who prospered following the PNG Games is Toea Wisil.
PNG’s current sprint queen who reigns from Jiwaka province is the most notable product of the PNG Games.
Minister for Sport, Justin Tkatchenko, said “the PNG Games is a key to the door when it comes to identifying sporting talent in our country and taking it to the next level.”
Tkatchenko, who has been the most vocal advocate of sports development in the country through the obvious infrastructural developmen’s, and supporting and driving the need of the high performance division, is a massive contributor to the country’s current sporting success.
He has also classified these games, as one of the biggest and most important events, in country.
The social impacts are also a contributing factor to why there is a lot of emphasis on these games.
The PNG Games is one of the only events that brings the country together.
The opportunities that these developmen’s will bring to the shores of the West New Britain province, will be far greater than just the hosting of the seventh PNG Games.
“These games are really the most important games that Papua New Guinea can ever host,” said Tkatchenko.
The games also provide centres outside of Port Moresby, with the opportunity of development, in terms of sporting infrastructure.
Kimbe for example, a small town in the West New Britain province, will see long awaited developmen’s in the township for the PNG Games.
