By Fabian Hakalits – EM TV, Port Moresby

The Autonomous Bougainville must address climate change at the highest political level.

Office of Climate Change and Development Acting Executive Director, Gwen Sissiou, made this call to the Autonomous Bougainville Government to be serious in addressing climate change within the region.

Bougainville is one of the first lots of climate change refugees in the world, the affected Carteret Islanders. This call is important, when the effects continue to be experienced in other parts of the autonomous region.

One immediate move is the set up for an office of Climate Change, initial part of the drawdown of powers and functions from the National Government in future.

Office of Climate Change and Development is ready to become partners with the autonomous government in addressing climate change.

The recent launching of a fundraising drive in Arawa, for Saint Patrick Teperoi Primary School’s relocation exercise because of rising sea level treats is a signpost for Papua New Guinea’s new autonomous government.

This is to remind the Government, of its primary role to protect lives.

National Airports Corporation Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Chairman of the St Patrick Teperoi Primary School Steering Committee, Sylvester Kenatsi, has also appealed to the Autonomous Bougainville Government to be serious with climate change.
