Tkatchenko Praises Kumuls Victory

By Eijah Lavett – EMTV Sport, Port Moresby

Minister for Sport, Justin Tkatchenko, has praised PNG’s national rugby league side after their narrow two-point win over the Fiji Batis last weekend.

Tkatchenko says there are big plans ahead for the PNG Rugby Football League, and the Kumuls in particular.

The Kumuls memorable win over Fiji wasn’t just their best performance in a long time; it was their first win away from home soil in 16 years.

Tkatchenko said when he started in 2012 as Minister for Sport, the Kumuls had to start from scratch, and to see where they are now after the Pacific Test shows that PNG rugby league is heading in the right direction.

With the inclusion of the SP PNG Hunters in the Queensland Intrust Super Cup, this has no doubt helped PNG players excel in the game.

PNG will be hosting pool matches during the 2017 Rugby League World Cup, and Tkatchenko says this is a big achievement for the country and rugby league in PNG.
