The Manus Refugee Processing Centre is undergoing final phases of shutting down according to Supreme Court orders.
There are 583 asylum seekers remaining at the transit center on East Lorengau. They have had their refugee status confirmed as genuine.
Minister for Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Rimbink Pato, says some of the asylum seekers have agreed to remain there pending resettlement in PNG, or in a third country.
The Minister made these remarks when responding to questions raised in relation to a law passed by the Australian government on asylum seekers.
The law prohibits any asylum seeker from entering Australia, including those at the Detention center in Manus, and at Nauru.
The minister is appealing to the international community,including Australia during the United Nations summit to assist PNG.
The Minister explains, based on the arrangement with the Australian Government under the Refugee Resettlement pact with the Commonwealth, PNG will put the 1500 persons who had sought asylum, in Australia.
24 others have already sought resettlement in PNG. They are currently living in Lae, Rabaul and Port Moresby.
