Oxfam PNG Launch PNG HARVEST Program

by Marie Kauna – EMTV Online, Port Moresby

Oxfam PNG has recently launched its new program ‘PNG HARVEST’ in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province.

Like the honey hotline extension that was launched this year for bee farmers, the ‘PNG HARVEST’ initiative taken will help provide agricultural extension services for the rural community especially those engaged in business activities to improve their income earning opportunities.

This is to provide technical knowledge to help the local rural farming families intensify their production, improve access pathways for more profitable markets, and to increase their income opportunities.

To achieve this aim, Oxfam PNG has partnered four community organisations and two local businesses to make this operation posisble. The four community organisations are Voice for Change in Jiwaka, KGWan, Independent Reform and Restoration Movement in Simbu and Henagaru Village Development Cooperative in Eastern Highlands, and the two local honey businesses are New Guinea Fruit Limited and Helping Hands Honey Producers.

With this partnership, all partners will work together to provide the necessary extension services to farming families in Jiwaka, Eastern and Simbu Provinces. Knowledge gained from this will help the farmers expand their knowledge and skills and improve their production operations.

The PNG HARVEST program also known as Papua New Guinea Highlands Accessing Rural Value Chains for Equitable Sustainability was co-founded by the New Zealand Aid Programme, Oxfam New Zealand, and HARVEST Partners.
