More work to maintain facilities in Manus Schools

Manus Governor, Charlie Benjamin, says more work is needed to renovate schools in Manus, Papua New Guinea.

Governor Benjamin said the allocated funding through the Education Department is taken for granted, with less attention to the maintenance of learning facilities.

He made this statement while attending the opening of a teacher’s house at Buyang Primary School.

Speaking to students, teachers and the local community, Governor Benjamin called for levels of Government to maintain and improve current learning facilities.

“We can build new classrooms and teachers’ houses but we must maintain these facilities,” said Governor Benjamin.

The level of education achievement is above average, but Manus Executive Education Manager for Manus says a better approach by parents is needed in guiding their children to achieve better results. Buyang Primary School is one school which is steadily growing but needs support to cater for the increase enrollment.

The new teacher’s house is a recent development for the school.

Governor Benjamin announced the funding of K100,000 to help build other infrastructures for the school.
