West Papuan Relocation

Under a legally bound agreement between the West Papuan Resettlement Committee and Government of the day, the West Papuans have been allocated a land along the 9-mile – Gerehu road.

However, time is not a luxury they have; faced with continuous eviction threats on the refugee population it has become desperate.

The West Papuan Rainbow Refugee Camp is working closely with the West Papuan Resettlement Committee of Port Moresby to speed up relocation.

However, their most urgent hurdle is that they are still considered refugees.

For them to legally acquire land, they have to be citizens.

Through the immigrations department, Waromi said they should be awarded citizenships by the end of this month.

The committees today hosted their second fund raiser in two months, to cover the cost of producing documents required to acquire citizenship as well as land titles.

The land allocated to them by NCD Governor, Powes Parkop, as per an NEC decision is 10 hectares in area.

In the meantime, the committee says it is waiting on the lands department to confirm land subdivisions before they can proceed.
