Crime on the Rise in Port Moresby

An increase in crime in Port Moresby is now a concern for city police. National Capital District (NCD) Metropolitan Superintendent, Ben Turi, says the public must take extra precaution or they could become victims.

The city police boss said armed robbery, murder, and car theft are reported daily in stations around the city.

Turi said business houses must be cautious when moving cash or other valuable items around the city. He also warned car owners as car theft by opportunists is becoming an everyday occurrence.

The NCD Metropolitan Superintendent also raised concerns of the manpower shortfall for units in patrolling the city. Despite this, Turi said police will engage in curbing crime in the city.

“We are down with policemen strength but we will ensure we do our best with whatever resources we have,” he said.

Just yesterday, a body of a man from Central province was found after being attacked at sea.

Police also made it known that sexual penetration of minors is also, sadly, on the rise in suburbs and settlements around the nation’s capital.
