The Papua New Guinea National Party held its official launch event in Port Moresby last Friday evening.
Unveiled at the event were the party’s policy platforms and directions towards the 2017 National Elections.
Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, speaking as an official guest speaker at the party’s launching, paid tribute to its founders for their contribution and support towards the socio-economic development of the nation.
He said these leaders whom he had known personally over his 42 year political career, gave prominence to the party.
PNG National Party was one of the indigenous parties alongside the Pangu Party, United Party, Peoples Progress Party and Melanesian Alliance during the pre and post-Independence era.
Members of the party played important roles in the formation of the country.
Sir Michael said PNG’s constitution unites this great nation, despite having diverse cultures and traditions.
Many people feared that tribalism would disunite Papua New Guinea but that did not eventuate. He said some provinces have longed for autonomy, however, MPs should evenly distribute the country’s wealth and provide services to the people.
In preparation toward the 2017 National Election, the party’s ambition is to lobby support and form the next government.
Party leader Kerenga Kua says Sir Michael’s presence indicates that he believes in the party’s policies, platform and members.
