‘Get into Rugby’ Development Program Awareness Expanding

After last week’s successful staging of the school’s rugby festival by the PNG Football Rugby Union (PNGRFL) under their ‘Get into Rugby’ development program, the organiSers are now looking at extending the reach of this program to Gulf Province, apart from the other parts of Central Province they are yet to cover.

Since the program’s inception in 2013, Port Moresby schools now have an organised competition, which is the ultimate aim of the program.

With the recent participation of schools from Rigo Coast, the Get into Rugby program has now expanded to Tubuserea and there are plans in place to reach all along the Motuan and Aroma coasts, and the Gulf Province.

Get into Rugby Facilitator, Sailosi Druma, said the program’s aim is to introduce the basics of rugby, get students to participate, and eventually they will be able kick off a competition at the end of the program.

Druma added that with a duration of six weeks to introduce basic rugby to an estimated 96 students in Rigo Coast, the students managed to showcase rugby worthy skills in the schools rugby festival.

Druma is confident with the expansion of the program after observing the festival last week. Students turned up in numbers and had displayed good rugby skills after six weeks of undergoing the program.

He added that despite reaching out to schools in Port Moresby, some schools are not keen on welcoming the program as yet.
