Australian and New Zealand Football Teams Lose in Rio

The Australian women’s football team has lost it’s opening match at the Rio Olympics, with a disappointing 2-0 loss to Canada.

Despite having much more possession throughout the match, the Matilda’s were unable to capitalise on their extra numbers in attack.

The Matildas conceded what could be the fastest goal scored in Olympic history, scoring just 20 seconds into the match.

Canada doubled their advantage in the second half despite having a player sent off.

The loss is a setback for Australia’s hopes of reaching the medal rounds, but they are far from done.

In another match prior to tonight’s official opening ceremony, the New Zealand Football Ferns were outclassed by world champions the United States.

The US scored in the first 10 minutes, before sealing the result early in the second half.

New Zealand next play Colombia on Sunday morning.

Hosts Brazil were dominant in their campaign opener with a 3-0 win over China. Meanwhile, in the men’s group, Oceania champions Fiji were thrashed 8-0 by South Korea, and will next face powerhouse Germany.

The Fijian U23 side qualified for Rio after defeating Vanuatu in July 2015 during the Pacific Games in Port Moresby.
