A fundraising drive along the famous Kokoda Track has drawn scepticism about the much anticipated delivery of government services.
Kokoda for Kidneys Team Leader and radio legend Roger Hau’ofa’s daughter, Michelle Hau’ofa, while walking the track noticed a porter spitting, and urinating blood.
“One of the porters has been vomiting blood and passing blood while urinating. None of us were aware of that until he collapsed from the track and almost fell off the cliff,” she said.
“Porters saw him and rushed up the hill and saved him from falling over,” she added.
She said the delivery of health and education is lacking along the track.
This gives them the drive and impetus to really work hard and bring services into the area.
“Incidents like this really drive home the fact that the people in the rural areas are really suffering,” she says.
Meanwhile, Michelle thanked Kokoda Track for using its name to raise funds for her dad and in return pledge to fund a project in conjunction with South Seas Horizons Trekking Company.
