Grand Chief Somare’s Last Visit to Morobe as Parliamentarian

Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare arrived in Lae yesterday afternoon to a low key welcome at Nadzab Airport. The Grand Chief is in Lae for his last engagement at the Momase Governor’s Conference.

Over the next two days the governor’s of Madang, Morobe, Sandaun and East Sepik will be discussing issues of common interest in Lae.

High on the agenda is the shipping service and border trade.

For Morobe, Somare’s attendance is important because it marks his last attendance before retirement as Governor of East Sepik.

A Morobe delegation led by Governor, Kelly Naru, was on hand to welcome Sir Michael upon arrival.

At various sections of highway on the way into Lae City, traffic was brought to a stand still to allow for his convoy.

The Grand Chief was taken to the provincial government headquarters where he delivered a short address discussing recent events, and the need to follow democratic processes.

“The people of the nation are feeling pain in their hearts,” he said.

Today the Grand Chief will be taken on a day trip to visit his old school Dregahafen, in the Fincshhafen District.

It’s an important connection that Morobe has with the father of the nation.
