Civil Aviation Safety Authority Medical Workshop

By Eric Haurupma – EMTV Port Moresby

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) held its first medical examiners workshop in Port Moresby yesterday.

Through this workshop, participants will be updated on civil aviation safety approaches to assess and measure the medical safety of pilots, air traffic controllers and engineers.

CASA representatives from PNG, Australia and New Zealand are participating in the event that will conclude today.

Aviation is a challenging field where safety of workers is of paramount concern, and this workshop will enable doctors to ensure that those workers within the industry remain fit and healthy.

CASA Senior Inspector of Program Licencing, Patrick Waeda, said the second phase of this project today will involve the inspection of Air Niugini’s 737 aircraft and its control towers.

In addition, a safety check-up will be carried out to assess the health of pilots sitting in a confined position while flying planes for a longer period time.

Directors are anticipating the workshop will be conducted annually.
