Travellers Delight: Alotau Town

By Samania Ned – EM TV Online

Wind in my face, rubbing the salty smell of the ocean mixed with fishy smell, I just cannot get enough of this sea-full aroma. And so, as a first timer, I am engrossed with the surrounding beauty of a small town, Alotau.

Located approximately South-East of Port Moresby, Alotau is surely a hideaway getaway from the bustling city noise.

With tourist flocking in at around this time of the year, the town lights up with displays of crafts ranging from baskets and mats, to wearable accessories made of ebony.

Alotau is a small town where life is surely slow, and a new comer could be easily noticed. Well organised town with fine hotels, resorts and lodges to host your visit, you would not regret the stay.

With a humid climate where rain and sun are just something you can’t predict, the weather is sure fine on any other day. On rainy days one can just relax with a good book in hand indoors to the sound of the orchestra of rain drops, its sure is good music. And on a good sunny day, Sanderson harbour comes to life with boats coming in and people going about doing everyday business while you walk about site-seeing.

You would not miss the Arts and Craft Market which was recently built next to the war memorial. And if the sunshine gets too hot, and you need to quench your thirst, visit the Alotau Town Market for some fresh “Kulau”. Variety of things are sold at the Market, such as garden produce, baskets, traditional lime pot, Bettlenut, mustard and lime and you could also find a mini mart within the market complex.

It is surely a town worth visiting.
