Five suspects are currently on trial for their involvement in a horrific massacre at Kenya’s Garissa University College in April this year.
One-hundred and forty-eight students were killed by hooded gunmen, who stormed the college campus with guns and explosives, while claiming allegiance to Somalian extremist militant group, al Shabaab.
The militants spared the lives of Muslim students, while Christian students were killed instantly.
Police and soldiers had a standoff with the fighters, which lasted 15 hours.
Students from the university were shocked by the slow reaction from police and the army, especially since the university is situated near police and army barracks.
Kenyan troops have been active in bordering Somalia since 2007, which has been fraught with territorial tensions between both African nations.
Over 400 Kenyans have been killed by al Shabaab militants since 2013 as the government struggles to stop fighters and weapons coming across both countries’ 700km border.
