Queensland Rugby League Respond to Incident

by Lorraine Genia – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

Queensland Rugby League (QRL) has responded to the assault of an Australian official, following the conclusion of the Intercity Cup Grand Final between the Agmark Gurias and TNA Simbu Lions on Saturday in Port Moresby.

Expressing their gratitude for the support received by the referee and match officials, the QRL confirmed that the officials are safe and well.

“The QRL referee was unharmed and all match officials who travelled to PNG are safe and well.”

“After the incident, the referee and fellow match officials received overwhelming support which they are most grateful for. The Sports Minister and Hunters coach, Michael Marum, were among numerous people who came to check on them.”

The referee described the grand final as a positive experience and is willing to referee in PNG again.

Meanwhile, Minister for Sports, Justin Tkatchenko, confirmed today in a press conference that the competition organisers will address the incident, and the official responsible will be punished accordingly.

“I have suggested a life ban on his involvement with the code, however that is an issue that we will sort out by the end of the week,” said Tkatchenko.
