Police Union Concern

By Vasinatta Yama, EM TV – Port Moresby

Police Union is concerned to see their members develop their careers in the force.

They said this in response to their Commissioner, Gari Baki, on the announcement yesterday to revive the Cadet Officers program.

However, the Union welcomes the reviving.

Police Union President, Lowa Tambua, said the training of cadet officers will fill the management gap the force is currently experiencing.

The union wants the constabulary to select candidates that are already in the force so that they can build their careers.

Despite disciplinary issues the force is facing, the Union is certain there are a few who can fit the position.

Commissioner Baki announced the reviving of the cadet program yesterday.

He said about 75 per cent of the entire police force are reaching the retirement age, and the force is running short of manpower.

Meanwhile, the Union praised the Government and Commissioner Baki for announcing the proposal to build 6,000 new buildings around the country.

However, they challenged the Government to honour their commitment.

The Union said housing problem has been a welfare issue for the police men and women.

The union says it is committed to fighting for members to get proper services.
