New Provincial Disaster Centres for Vanuatu

Two new provincial disaster centres will be constructed in the provinces of Torba and Tafea, in Vanuatu. Both facilities will include rooms for disaster operations centres and will cost the government US $400,000 to construct.

The disaster centres are part of the Vanuatu government’s continued disaster response effort in the aftermath of Cyclone Pam that devastated the Pacific nation in March. At least 11 people were killed and scores of families left homeless.

The two provincial disaster centres will strengthen emergency response efforts and provincial disaster officers have already been stationed at the sites that will host the centres.

With disaster relief continuing, Vanuatu is set to receive US $500,000 in aid from Russia. Formalities for the donor funding were made at the United Nations by Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative, Sergey Konounchenko, and Vanuatu’s Ambassador, Odo Tevi.

The government is focused on rebuilding infrastructure and restoring Vanuatu’s economy.
