Manus Landowners Cry for Further Investigation

by Vanessa Knight – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Mamalih landowners from the west coast of Manus Province are seeking further interventions from the Lorengau District Court to restrain further logging activities on their land. This has been occurring through work undertaken by the Jaha Development Coorporation Limited and logging contractor Monarch Investment Limited.

Clan leaders say all logging activities on the Mamalih land ceased in October 2009 following a temporary restraining order granted by the Lorengau District Court to resolve a land dispute, however despite this, logging activities in the area resumed in April this year.

The leaders say they have not granted permission for the harvesting of their resources, and say this practice is illegal.

Mamalih spokesperson Gordon Kundrake told EMTV News that the landowners are left in the dark as to who has been, or will be, receiving royalties from these activities.
