Morobe Mining Joint Ventures has suspended operations, following the death of an employee working at the Hidden Valley project site last Saturday afternoon.
Morobe Mining Joint Ventures is a partnership between Australian-based Newcrest Mine and South Africa’s third-largest gold mining company, Harmony Gold. The joint venture operate the Hidden Valley gold and silver mine and Wafi-Golpu gold-copper mine in Morobe Province.
Newcrest Mine and Morobe Mining Joint Ventures expressed deep sadness at the incident, extending their condolences to family and colleagues of the deceased, who was fatally injured in a road accident at the mine site.
“Safety is our number one priority and production at Hidden Valley is suspended until further notice,” said Newcrest spokeswoman Rachel Eaves, who added that the exact cause of death remains unknown.
Morobe Mining Joint Ventures has a yearly production target of 250,000 ounces of gold and 2.5 million to 3 million ounces of silver.
