by Marie Kauna – EMTV Online, Port Moresby

Chinese president Xi Jinpingin has signed a joined residential statement on climate change and announced the China South-South Climate Cooperation Fund to help affected developing nations.

The fund is an initiative to help support developing nations facing challenges posed by climate change, and enhance their capacity to access the Green Climate Fund.

As a developing nation, the Fijian government has welcomed the Chinese initiative.

Peter Emberson, director of climate change of Fiji’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “this allocation by China is very timely”, with the understanding that the fund will help achieve positive outcomes.

Pacific Islands Development Forum, a regional organisation consisting of the Pacific Island countries and territories has also hailed to launch the Chinese fund.

The fund will help the small island developing states to assist them in their struggles and challenges posed by climate change. It will help them enhance their capacity to monitor, manage and work towards achieving a successful Paris COP21 outcome.
