More Papua New Guinean women are taking up male dominated careers.
Recently, three women were among 155 graduands in the field of heavy diesel equipment operators.
They graduated with certificates from the Kumul Training Institute in Port Moresby.
Cathy Parai, graduated with a certificate in backhoeing, while Lydia Kapeli and Galley Philip were certified as excavators.
Kumul Training Institute Director, Max Kuri, said KTI has had trained women in the field of backhoeing, dump trucks, prime movers, mobile craning and excavating.
“The booming in the Mining and Petroleum Industry is the driving factor that is forcing more PNG women to take up studies in order to perform responsibilities once dominated by men,” he said.
Mr. Kuri said while millions of kina have been invested to fund PNG women to take up studies overseas, this local institution has been providing an alternate avenue to educate women in Papua New Guinea.
“KTI gives second chances to school leavers to undergo technical skills training as an opportunity to build our human resource development.
It also offers extensive certificate and diploma courses in business management, accounting, tourism and hospitality, banking and finance and human resource management from its Port Moresby and Lae campuses.
