With a number of debutants in the Kangaroos side that took on the Kumuls in the recent Prime Minister’s clash over the weekend, many players saw that Rugby League was more of a religion than a sport.
Kangaroo’s skipper, Trent Merrin, shared his thoughts in the press conference after the match.
He said the experience has opened up a new perspective on how Papua New Guineans love their rugby league.
“From the airport, to the streets, the people here in PNG love their Rugby League,” he said.
Children from a number of public schools in the city also had the opportunity to learn basic rugby skills from the Kangaroos through the League Bilong Laif program.
The Kangaroos skipper was full of praise of development programs, adding that it was an aspect of their careers that they enjoyed.
When asked of his thoughts on rugby league in PNG, he said that as a first time visitor to the country, he was thrilled with the code’s popularity.
For a number of them, this was their first visit to the country and not their last.
