PNG Scouts to go to World Scout Jamboree, Japan

by Tokana Hasavi Jr – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Seventeen PNG Scouts will leave PNG shores this weekend for the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Japan.

It’s a convention that convenes the 161 member countries of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement.

The 17 scouts from the Scout Association of PNG will travel on Saturday.

The Scout Association of PNG is one the oldest and first youth development organisations in the country and its member operate on pure voluntary basis.

The association was instigated by the United Kingdom, and online data date its origin to 1926 at Hanuabada in the nation’s capital.

Its doctrines mainly encompass moral ethics and life skills.

National Scout Association Administrator and head of the PNG scouts to Japan, Noel Pinda, said more numbers are needed in the association.

The association was legislated by parliament in 1975, but insufficient funding and lack of government’support has reduced the association’s services.

PNG’s founding father, Sir Michael Somare, and current governor general, Sir Michael Ogio, were scouts themselves, but the desire of rendering services on a voluntary basis, has dwindled in this age of technology.

However, the young and keen in the likes of Daisy Uvisa and Kevin Kovea, who form part of the contingent to Japan, say they are thrilled about the experience.
