PNG Communications Workers Union Question Process

by Serah Aupong – EM TV News, Port Moresby

The PNG Communications Workers Union has raised concerns over the new process that Telikom PNG has employed in regards to restructuring the company.

The Acting General Secretary, Jeffrey Borari, and the President, Nug Mamtirin, claim that the Union has not been consulted in the process.

The Union executives say that the Spill and Fill, a redundancy process that is being used by Telikom PNG, is in breach of the Enterprise Bargaining Agreement of 2010.

“The management thinks they can do anything they want,” said Borari.

Union executives claim Telikom PNG management has not been transparent with their dealings.

“The retrenchment exercise using the spill and fill as far as the union is concerned is illegal,” said Mamtirin.

In February, Telikom management travelled to centres around the country to explain to staff this process that will shape the company’s future.

Telikom management say the aim of the process is to find the best people for the jobs.

In a telephone interview with EMTV today, Telikom PNG’s CEO, Michael Donnelly, said the spill and fill process is not voluntary, and it is a process where they “aim to identify critical skills” and match “highly skilled individuals” who have proven that they can do the job.

Donnelly says it has been a “transparent and public process” that has included the Union and so far, staff have been “fully supportive”.

He says as part of building a sustainable telecommunications business, there needs to be an upgrade of technology, and this upgrade will be matched with the right people.
