Pacific Games: Joint Security Operations in Place

by Vasinatta Yama – EM TV, Port Moresby

With 148 days before the Pacific Games begin, heads of the three disciplinary forces continue to promote their joint cooperation to provide security during the Games.

Deputy Police Commissioner (Operations), Jim Andrews said the PNG Defence Force and correctional services will be assisting police with manpower.

Mr Andrews is confident that at least 2,500 police officers will be deployed to Port Moresby to be involved in this operation.

He said the PNGDF will send a platoon, while correctional services will do the same. He confirmed that the constabulary has paid for some of the necessary equipment needed for the Games.

Brigadier General, Gilbert Toropo said yesterday that apart from assisting with manpower, the army is working with its Australian counterparts through joint exercises to develop a proper security plan for the Games.

But he emphasised the need for defence personnel to maintain a high level of discipline.

This is one of the first and biggest joint operations that will see all three forces working together to achieve a common goal. Today, the Chinese Embassy presented 20 motorbikes to police that will assist in transportation during the Games.

The operation will see officers from all three forces conducting traffic diversions, crowd control and general security for both athletes and the public.
