New Bypass to Benefit Gnagnaifua and Inauwaniu Locals

A new 15 kilometre bypass will be constructed between Gnagnaifua and Inauwaniu villages in the Mekeo-Kuni Local Level Government area of Kairiku-Hiri District in Central Province.

The stretch will allow people from the Inauwaniu village to have access to vital government servicAn agreement for the construction of a new bypass was reached yesterday during a meeting between clan chiefs of Gnagnaifua and Inauwaniu villages of West Mekeo, and witnessed by local MP, Peter Isoaimo, as well as members of the District Development Administration and ward councilors.

Earlier this year, the two villages had conflict over the construction of this new bypass that escalated to court battles.

es they have been cut-off from by the Apanaipi River for almost two years.

However, these differences were put on the table yesterday with both parties who reconciled and consented to allow this new stretch into Inauwaniu village.

Mekeo-Kuni Local Level Government President, Bona Ine’e, said after this successful meeting villages would clear forest today to mark the new bypass prior to the construction of the road.

About K240,000 was given from the local member’s office as part of the District’s Service Improvement Support grants to carry out this construction work.

This scope of work will see the upgrading of the 25km road from Veifa’a to Inauwaniu village.

That includes the 15km bypass connecting Gnagnaifua and Inauwaniu villages.

In 2014, the old stretch of road connecting Inauwaniu and Gnagnaifua was washed away by flood. After this ordeal, Inauwaniu villagers have been finding it difficult in terms of road usage.

Following this reconciliation ceremony, Inauwaniu villagers paid K1,000 cash with two pigs and some goods to Gnagnaifua villages as a token of appreciation.
