Intentions to destroy cultural artifacts on National Prayer Day have been strongly condemned by the National Cultural Commission.
Similar positions have been taken by the National Council of Churches and today PNG’s Founding Father, Sir Michael Somare.
NCC Director Dr.Jacob Simet described this as “Waigani Madness” saying NCC is mandated by its act to protect all cultural heritage of country.
Dr.Simet further described this as an act of Cultural Genocide.
A two page paid advertisement published on the 24th of August called for all Papua New Guineans to bring in all false gods, idols and witchcraft objects to burn and destroy on National Prayer day on the 26th of August.
National Cultural Commission says this is against the country’s constitution and the office if mandated to protect and preserve the country’s cultural heritage.
It said it is also a violation of section 45 of the constitution which calls for respect of individual believes and conscience.
The country will marking the National Prayer Day tomorrow at Parliament House where the burning of the cultural artifacts is expected to take place .
