Lae police’s top cop, Chief Inspector Timothy Pomoso, said the driver of the vehicle that hit and killed four girls, including two Lae Secondary students on Saturday at Cassia Crescent, will be arrested and charged when he is fit to give his statement.
Lae police officers investigating the incident went to the driver’s family home to make the arrest.
They found that the driver, a public servant from the Kabwum district still could not speak or move, making it difficult for them to bring him in for statement.
“Police have located him and they’ve physically checked him, but due to the injuries sustained they weren’t being able to bring him in,” said Chief Inspector Pomoso.
“I was also told that he sustained injuries from the vehicle and from the public bashing him.”
The driver hasn’t recovered enough to be able to speak after serious injuries sustained in the accident, and the beating he received from the public.
Police say the driver could potentially die in the cells from his injuries, if he is forcefully arrested.
On Saturday, after crawling out from the vehicle that killed the four girls, the driver stood at the scene for more than two hours.
He was taken to Angau hospital for treatment where his relatives moved him in fear of retaliation.
Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru, said that public servants caught drink driving will be arrested and the driver responsible for the deaths of the four girls must be punished.
