Lae Gears up for 40th Independence Celebrations

by Colleen Barilae – EM TV News, Lae

This year’s 40th independence anniversary celebration in Lae is expected to be one of the biggest ever, in comparison to previous events thanks to a K200,000 investment by the Morobe Provincial Government.

The event’s organising committee Chairman, Robin Calistus, said contributions have also come from both the private and public sectors within Lae city.

Today Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru, met with other government stakeholders and members of business houses in Lae to discuss this year’s independence celebrations in Lae.

The public in Lae are looking forward to an extravagant celebration that will begin on September 7 before continuing all the way through to the big day itself on September 16.

Calistus said the event would be one of the biggest.

He said over K900,000 will be spent on the 10 days of festivity in the city.

Governor Naru, when officiating at the launch, raised concerns on the government’s financial support towards supporting the event in the country’s industrial hub.

Lae’s Police Chief of Operations, Timothy Pomoso, has sounded a warning to the Lae public to be cautious, as there will be a significant number of people flocking to the city to celebrate.

He said police are already geared up to carry out security operations over the 10-day celebration.
