Chairman of the Investigation Task Force Sweep, Sam Koim, has raised concerns on the funding allocation for the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC).
“In the years ICAC was not in operation, it has received K45 million, but now that parliament has introduced the organic law on ICAC it has not been allocated any funding in the 2016 budget,” Koim said.
This is a very serious concern when dealing with corruption, which is rampant in Papua New Guinea.
“All this are motivated with bad faith,” he added.
Koim said the government cannot continue to penalise the Investigation Task Force Sweep and other agencies that are fighting corruption.
“Much of the government’s conduct has been subjected to the scrutiny of the courts. The courts have independently spoken in most or all cases and have granted orders to prevent such acts but it seems to go unheeded,” said Koim.
He says ICAC could not perform effectively under such circumstances if it does not receive its funding.
