Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru, has called on the government to be fair in its yearly provincial support improvement program funds distribution.
The governor’s call comes after Morobe received only K4 million of the K45 million budgeted for its 2015 public service programs.
A series of medical assistance programs from the provincial health authority are also threatened with ceasing, due to insufficient funds.
“Equal and equitable distribution of funds and resources to the majority of the people in this country, over 80 per cent of which are based in rural areas, is of paramount and significant importance, in terms of good governance,” Governor Naru said.
The delay of funds is affecting the provincial government’s medivac program.
Morobe has nine districts scattered on rugged terrain, with citizens often finding it difficult to access basic health services.
The call for equitable access of PSIP funds comes amidst Morobe’s increasing demand for quality health services.
Since the medivac program commenced, more than 200 women have benefited from it.
It is feared though if further delays were to occur, this may cause a total collapse in the program’s operations.
