Goroka Gosihas Ready for Their First Match

By Elijah Lavett – EM TV Sport, Port Moresby

This is a proud moment for soccer in Eastern Highlands Province, with a lot of support from the people set to come for competition newcomers, the Goroka Gosihas.

The newcommers into the National Soccer League (NSL) will play their first match this weekend at the National Sport Institute in Goroka against defending champions, Lae City Dwellers.

The team, captained by Sammy Sasame, was in Port Moresby this week for the launching of the NSL.

Many of the players are not from Goroka, but most have lived in the province long enough to call it home.

“The boys in the team were born and raised in Goroka, even though we are not from the area, we still say we are from here” said Sasame.

According to the captain the team has been preparing well under coach, Peter Kauna.

This is a big step Goroka soccer has taken and a proud moment for the province to have a team in the semi-professional competition.

“We look forward to taking part in the competition and the people of Goroka area very excited,” said Goroka Soccer President, Cathy Agunam.

Now that Goroka has a team in the NSL, programs have been put into place for development of young and upcoming soccer players to one day play for the Gosihas.
