The National Airport Corporation (NAC) has embarked on a rigorous airport upgrade program, this afternoon signing a contract or the upgrade of the Goroka Airport in Eastern Highlands Province.
Covec has been contracted to carry out the development.
The Goroka Airport in the Eastern Highlands Province is in for a major facelift.
The signing of the contract agreement with the contractor Covec will see the upgrading of the aircraft pavement, a new terminal building and associated works.
The project will be funded by the Asian Development Bank costing K82 million, and will commence after ground breaking next week.
CEO and Managing Director of the NAC, Joseph Tupiri, says he is committed to improving airport infrastructure throughout the country.
Goroka Airport comes under phase two of the Civil Aviation Development Infrastructure Program
Other Airports undergoing upgrade are Vanimo Airport, Girua in Popondetta and Chimbu.
Covec is optimistic of completing the airport within the given time frame of 17 months.
Goroka will be hosting APEC events in 2018, and it is required that the completion date be strictly adhered.
Other airports under upgrade and ready to be open are the Kagamuga Airport in Mt. Hagen and Kimbe Airport in West New Britain.
