Death Over Market Space

by Theckla Gunga – EM TV News, Port Moresby

One man is dead and six houses were torched at Port Moresby’s Hohola suburb this morning.

This comes after a fight erupted between two ethic groups from the Highlands Region.

The fight allegedly started from a disagreement, over the market sitting arrangements at the Hohola Market.

Police have met with families of both the victim and the attacker in an attempt to contain the situation.

Newly appointed National Capital District Commander Chief Inspector, Ben Turi, spoke with leaders of both communities and asked them to surrender the suspects to police.

“Discuss with your people and come down to the (Hohola) police station and we can narrow down the list of suspects.”

The fight resulted in the closure of the market. Men, women and children who fled to the Burn’s Peak Hill in fear of their lives were asked to return home and allow police to look into the ethic clash.

At least three fights have occurred in the last 72 hours.

Police Station Commanders responsible for the three areas have been directed to collect witness statements and carry out full investigations.

A team of police officers including the newly appointed police station commanders visited these residential areas in Port Moresby today as an awareness campaign to appeal to NCD residents to refrain from engaging in alcohol or betel nut related crimes.
