Business Coalition for Women Launch Family Violence Policy

by Theckla Gunga – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Business Coalition for Women (BCFW) Chairperson, Lesieli Taviri says sexual violence in Papua New Guinea continues to affect the productivity of female employees in the workforce.

Discussions revealed that over eight in every 10 female employees who are victims of this violence are, unfortunately, suffering silently.

The Business Coalition for Women is now investing in an approach that will assist in addressing this violence at work.

The approach involves the introduction of the Family and Sexual Violence (FSV) policy, as well as providing appropriate training to support its eventual implementation.

The FSV policy has been designed to be implemented simultaneously with other existing workplace policies, such as those involved in areas like occupational health and anti-discrimination.

BCFW’s Lesieli Taviri stressed the negative impact businesses face when female victims miss work, and the possible losses the employer may suffer.

Those who have expressed interest in the policy will look to develop a supportive and non-judgemental workplace for the victims, and to provide a platform for female employees to grow professionally.

Lady Winifred Kamit announced the launch of the three products.

The formulation of the FSV policy reflects the increase in the number of female employees in the professional environment.

Traditionally, addressing family based violence has lacked exposure, but with more females now in the workforce it’s time for this to change.

With the launch of this initiative it’s predicted that family and sexual violence will now be minimised in the professional environment.
