22 Kokoda Court Officials Trained

by Adelaide Kari – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Twenty-two Kokoda village court officials went through a week long training course funded by the Australian government.

The course was facilitated by the Northern Provincial Government’s Justice and Community Development division.

The village court officials now have strengthened their capabilities to deliver consistent and fair decisions for communities in Kokoda, Northern Province.

The village court officials were trained in modules in an updated village court manual that was launched in 2014.

The module has so far trained more than 16,000 village court officials.

The training course also addressed issues affecting the most vulnerable community members, such as individuals affected by family and sexual violence, HIV/AIDS and consideration for those living with disabilities.

Also in training were four female magistrates.

Jean Honi, a female magistrate described the training as a milestone that will raise the profile and status of women village court officials significantly.
