NCDC Boxing Trials

By Elijah Lavett – EM TV Sport, Port Moresby

National Captial District (NCD) Boxing had their first trials over the weekend at Murray Barracks, at the Ben Moide Club, in preparation for the National Boxing Championships in Kavieng.

Seven associations took part with many boxers showing great skill, all looking for a spot in the NCD team to travel to Kavieng.

Boxers fought in their respective divisions, starting in the 49kg division all through to the 91gg+.

With many hoping for a spot in team NCD, young star John Ume, who trains at Taurama under the watchful eyes of Martin Benny, caused the biggest upset yesterday when he beat Pacific Games gold medalist and boxing captain, Tom Boga, in a fight that brought the crowd to their feet.

Also present was PNG rep Raphaella Kaore, who boxed her way to a win, after losing to her Kairuku opponent in their invitational match two weeks ago.

The final trials will be held next week with a lot of new talent being showcased, proving selection for the team will be competitive.
