National Football Stadium Ready for 2016

By Elijah Lavett – EM TV Sport, Port Moresby

Minister for Sport, Justin Tkatchenko, is hoping that the first matches of the Port Moresby Rugby Football League competition, as well as the Intercity Cup will be played in March next year at the newly refurbished National Football Stadium.

The world-class venue will be primarily designed to cater for rugby league, and the field has been internationally certified. It marks an exciting time for the code, with participants at the local level now having the chance to ply their trade on a top notch surface.

The contactors reassured Tkatchenko that the facilities will be ready in time for both competitions.

The stadium will be officially opened by the Prime Minister once complete, which will be followed by the first match.

Another seating area will be built for corporate executives, which will assist in finishing off the stadium.

Appropriate fencing will be built around the stadium with the availability of car park space and the inclusion of restaurants and cafés inside.

Curtain Brothers have taken on the responsibility of completing the stadium, in a Private Public Partnership with the government.

Once the stadium is complete, it will be the biggest in Papua New Guinea.

It will be completed by September 2016, two months prior to the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.
