Morobe Province Struggles From Funding Delay

by Berthanie Harriman – EM TV News, Lae

Morobe Governor Kelly Naru says the Provincial Government has received only three million kina of the forty-five million kina Provincial Service Improvement Program (PSIP) funding allocation from the National Government.

“We have have only received three million kina from the forty five million kina promised by the National Government, what do you do with three million kina, I can’t move programs on the ground,” said Naru.

Faced with the possibility of projects coming to a halt because due to lack of funding, Governor Naru has called on the National Government to come clean with the state of the country’s economy.

The Morobe Provincial Government has been working on a PSIP allocation of a three million kina- that’s how much money received from the National Government this year from the forty million kina budget allocation.

Much of the Provincial governments service delivery projects hinges on the PSIP funding.

Morobe governor Kelly Naru said the rural medical evacuation program for pregnant mothers with manalos aviation and projects supporting basic services like health and education are slowly coming to a halt.

He now wants the National Government to come clean with the state of the countries economy.

“The National Government can’t keep saying all is good all is well, when the reality on the ground reflects the contrary,” said Naru.

Economic Analysts say that the country is facing an economic crisis, but the National Government has been playing it down, saying the country’s economy is stable.

Morobe’s dry spell hitting rural parts is also putting pressure on Provincial Government resources.

Morobe is one of the countries biggest Provinces, with nine rural districts scattered throughout the mountains and the coast.
