With reports showing that literacy and numeracy standards in Papua New Guinea are low, Dr Eliakim Apelis has said that strategies are being developed in order to make improvements.
The Acting Deputy Secretary for Schools and Education Standards Directorate made these comments following the release of a report, which shows PNG to be lagging behind Pacific neighbours such as Solomon Islands and Samoa.
These results come from a joint Australian Aid and UNICEF funded project, the Pacific Benchmarking Education project, which shows that PNG needs to improve its literacy and numeracy levels across the board.
The same criteria was used across the Pacific, evaluating countries final examination results for literacy and numeracy, with the findings showing that PNG has considerable room for improvement.
“We found out that PNG is not doing well in literacy and numeracy in whichever grade we are addressing,” Eliakim said.
However, Dr Eliakim said strategies are being developed to improve standards.
Speaking during the opening of a new playground at the Koiari Park Adventist Primary School today, the Deputy Secretary said the new standard based curriculum is expected to set standards across the entire Pacific region.
